Digital Trap: How Screens are Hijacking Kids' Emotions

United States: A group of scientists from Australian Catholic University checked the records of 300,000 kids and discovered that screen time leads to emotional and behavioral issues and also makes it their chosen way to cope with stress.

Screens bring about problems and also provide the solutions kids seek, and this situation is called a “vicious cycle” by researchers.

More about the news

The research published in Psychological Bulletin is the biggest study on the emotional development of children due to screen time.

Rather than calling screens only good or bad, it explains how our digital world is having a more detailed influence on how children develop. The theme of video games appeared as the highest concern in the discussion.

“Screen use may increase the risk of children developing socio-emotional problems, and children with socioemotional problems may be drawn to screens, possibly as a way to manage their distress,” as per the researchers’ review, studyfinds.org reported.

Those who took part in gaming were at much greater risk of suffering emotional and behavioral problems when they grew up.

The disturbing fact is that kids who already faced these issues ended up gaming a lot more than they did other screen activities.

Putting children in front of screens for video games affected them in a much bigger way than simply using screens for watching TV.

When these kids needed a break, gaming was the most popular screen activity for them.

Contrary to most people’s beliefs, the age group 6 through 10 experienced more difficulties related to screens compared to those aged 0 to 5, studyfinds.org reported.

It probably has to do with autonomy since teenagers are able to use devices whenever they need to get away from their emotions.
