Too Trusting? Hidden Dangers of Williams Syndrome 

Williams Syndrome causes individuals to display extreme warmth and trust, often forming instant bonds with strangers. While deeply affectionate, this behavior can lead to social vulnerability and safety risks. 

United States: Just imagine that, as you walk the streets, you are flooded with warmth and love for all the people you see. 

People with Williams Syndrome (WS), a special health condition impacting about 1 in 7,500 people, have this experience a lot. 

Those with WS, commonly known as the ‘opposite of autism,’ have a strong urge to connect with complete strangers by offering hugs. 

They are full of feelings, they care, enjoy chatting, and have a lot of friends. They become friends with practically everyone they meet, but sometimes this can be a problem. 

People often have difficulty keeping close relationships and end up feeling isolated and lonely. 

People with WS may sometimes share too much information with strangers and not sense that there is a danger, which makes them more likely to be abused or bullied. 

According to Alysson Muotri, a professor of paediatrics and cellular and molecular medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), “It’s very easy for someone to fool a person with Williams Syndrome and take advantage of them, because they are so trusting,” BBC reported. 

“They give themselves to anybody without prejudice, which seems like a lovely trait, but at the end of the day, there is a reason why the human brain evolved to be a little bit suspicious of a new person. You don’t know if that person is there to hurt you or to love you, and they [a person with WS] cannot make that distinction,” he stated. 

Visuospatial syndrome usually causes individuals to rely on others for support, and they may die early due to anxiety. Health concerns can happen, too; for example, it may result in heart disease, slow development, or challenges with learning. 

A lot of people with WS also have a lower IQ than the average. In recent years, studies of the condition have shown new findings, giving scientists an insight into how kindness, trust, and friendliness developed in humans. 

First off, some facts. Humans have 46 chromosomes, organised into 23 pairs. In the process of creating sperm or eggs, recombination takes place and allows the swapping of genetic material between the same chromosomes, BBC reported. 

Nevertheless, the wrong step is taken in WS, and a chunk of DNA from one copy of chromosome seven is deleted by mistake. So, individuals with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome are missing one copy of a group of 25-27 genes.
